An easy and stunning trip from Vieste to the Tremiti Islands
On your next holiday in Apulia make the best of the strategic location of Hotel Portonuovo and plan a trip to the Tremiti Islands, also known as the Diomedee Islands, and nicknamed The pearls of the Adriatic.
An archipelago close to Vieste
The Tremiti Islands, a unique Archipelago made up of 5 islands, lies just 12 miles off the Gargano promontory:
- San Nicola
Considered the most interesting, as it is the historical, religious and administrative heart of the archipelago
- San Domino
The largest, yet mostly wild (Aleppo pine woods). Its coasts are lined with a number of beautiful sea caves
A tiny clayey islet that owes its yellow shades to its composition, and is gradually disappearing due to heavy wind and water erosion
Uninhabited, yet stunning; features an impressive natural arch (the Architello) in the Punta Secca area, where the lighthouse stands
As it is really low (maximum height above sea level 15 metres), it is partly covered by the waters during certain periods. Small in size (11 hectares) and uninhabited, it is located far from the other islands.
St. Nicholas monastery fortress
The Isle of San Nicola (Isola di San Nicola) is the home of the stunning Abbey-Fortress of Santa Maria a Mare (St. Mary by the Sea), built by Benedictine monks in 1045, and formerly property of Montecassino Abbey..
