Vieste: a history, nature, and beauty blend
White Vieste, with its historical centre crammed with alleyways and ancient stories to be unravelled, stands just 4.5 km from our hotel. The narrow streets once used to be a safe haven for frantic locals seeking protection each time the Saracen pirates landed. This is why the coast is still scattered with watchtowers.
This is just one of Vieste's many souls, which you can experience on a walk to the ripa, one of the most ancient and evocative vantage points.
Sightseeing in Vieste
Vieste Cathedral roughly dates back to the 13th century. It treasures the statue of St. Mary of Merino, the local patron saint, which is placed on a special throne on the high altar from 30 April to 9 May.
Southbound, Vieste beach leads to the local landmark: the Pizzomunno, a huge limestone monolith. According to a legend, it is actually the petrified body of a young local boy who, indifferent to the lure of the sirens, remained faithful to his partner Cristalda. As a revenge, the sirens killed the girl and hid her in the abyss so she would never be found
- The trabuccos
The fishermen's trabuccos, found along the coastline nearby Vieste, still tell stories about long-gone crafts and hardship. They are special wooden buildings, fitted with large fishing nets, once used as fish "traps” (“trabucco” comes from “trabocchetto”, which is an Italian word for “trap”).
- Federiciano Castle
Vieste’s Svevo or Federiciano Castle stands on a cliff overlooking the sea (in the Scialara beach area). It dates back to 1242 and now hosts the Navy headquarters –it is therefore open to the public only at certain times in summer. Nevertheless, its exterior makes a great asset with its amazingly scenic location.
Do not forget that you can use Hotel Portonuovo's shuttle to reach Vieste and visit the old town!
